In the ancient oasis Dedan, close to today's city of Al-Ula in Madina Province, a kingdom flourished from at least the 6th century until the 2nd century BCE. There, the kings of Dedan and later Lihyan reigned over a territory that spread at its apogee from the city of Yathrib (today's Madinah) to the Levant. In their capital Dedan, some remains of these brilliant kingdoms have been excavated, including an impressive necropolis whose tombs were dug into the side of Jebel Dedan that overlooks the city on the east. These tombs are square-shaped holes, cut at different heights out of the side of the mountain, their cavities being about two meters deep. They are approximately dated to the 5th century BCE, the probable period of the Lihyanite takeover of the region. Jabal lkmah - Rock Art, perhaps one of Saudi Arabia’s most significant epigraphic sites, Jabal ‘Ikmah contains hundreds of etched and relief inscriptions acting as an “open library” for the Dadanitic and Lihyanic cultures as far back as the 6th through 3rd Centuries. These writings shed light on the origins of the Arabic language, beliefs and practices. Located 5 km north of Old Town AlUla, this location is believed to have been a highly spiritual place due to its secluded location in a canyon valley and inscriptions recording offerings.
Morning Free Time at Leisure OR Experience the (optional) Adventure Trail which will take you through the story of the people who lived in this area thousands of years ago; their writings are on the wall, how they lived, how they fought, and how they connected with each other. With three floors of in-depth exhibits, the museum is an excellent way to learn about the history and foundation of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and the wider Arabian Peninsula. There is also an entire floor dedicated to the city’s rich Islamic heritage. Leave from the museum to visit The Angawi House, home of renowned Jeddah architect Dr Sami Angawi.
